There was a massive gas leak that reached explosive proportions today, January 5th, 2008 at an abandoned and condemned building, the Windermere, on 9th Avenue at 57th Street. Several hundred FDNY arrived. 9th Avenue was closed from 57th Street south for more than 2 hours as the gas leak was investigated. As expected, Con Ed was the last to arrive on the scene. There were no reported firefighter injuries. The Windermere has not been occupied since mid September when the FDNY evicted the remaining tenants of the building due to unsafe living conditions.
